Life is pure chance: while on a trip to Japan, fashion designer Ida meets the two “fish sellers” Otto and Leo at a bus stop. Calling themselves the “Flying Fish Doctors,” they’ve specialized in a valuable koi fish. Ida falls for Otto and marries him immediately in Japan.
Back in Germany, while Otto is perfectly content in their modest living situation, Ida’s thirst for more seems unquenchable. The tension between her and Otto grows…

Doris Dorrie is regarded as one of the few female directors in Germany who can command both enthusiastic reviews and top-grossing box office. Her first film MEN (1985) has drawn six million people to the theatres and won both the German Film Prize and the “Goldene Leinwand”. After PARADIES, she shot her first American film: the adaptation of Alberto Moravia’s best-seller ME AND HIM, which won her the “Goldene Leinwand.” In 1994, Dorrie returned to the tragicomedy genre with the feature “Keiner liebt mich.” Dorrie is also a respected novelist: her novel “Das blaue Kleid” won the German Book Award.
