1939: Rome. Despite the political tensions, the Jewish producer Davide Rieti is making one of his major films: ‘Tosca’. During the film shooting the two main actors, the German Kristina and the English James – personification of two different mentalities – face each other and finally fall in love. Shooting risks being interrupted because of a sexual scandal involving Rieti himself. The producer, however, making an extraordinary effort complete the film over one night. So Tosca is finished before the War: Rieti is arrested, Kristina and James return in their countries. Months later, ‘Tosca’ is screened for the first time.

Born in 1940 in Newcastle, Irvin began his career as an assistant director with British Transport Films. After shooting shorts and documentaries for a number of years and working for English TV, Irvin broke through to American audience with the adaptation of John le Carre’s novel, ‘Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy’ .In 1980 Irvin directed his first feature, ‘Dogs of war’. He went on with: ‘Champions’, ‘Raw Deal’, ‘Hamburger Hill’. In 1994 Irvin helmed ‘Widow’s Peak’.The director went to alter
