AmericanEast is a timely, poignant drama about Arab-Americans living in post-9/11 Los Angeles. The story examines long-held misunderstandings about Arabic and Islamic culture, and puts a human face on a segment of the U.S. population whom most Americans know nothing about, but who today are of particular interest to them, either from curiosity or suspicion. The story highlights the pressures under which many Arab-Americans now live by focusing on the points-of-view of three main characters.
Hesham Issawi was born in Egypt where he grew up with an insatiable appetite for American movies. In 1990 he moved to the States to study filmmaking at Columbia College. Once he graduated he began working at a local TV station and producing short documentaries. In 2002 he wrote and directed his first fictional film “ The Interrogation”. In 2003 “T For Terrorist” was the winner of The Best Short Film Award of both the Boston and San Francisco Film Festivals. In 2006 he directed his feature debut “AmericanEast”.
