Thomas, stationmaster: 12 years without one mistake, suddenly the apocalypse: 22 dead, over 100 injured. Distracted by the flirtatious Anna, Thomas ignored a signal to lower the gate at a road crossing and the train collides with a truck.
In trial Anna testifies in his favor, Thomas is acquitted. Yet neither he nor Anna can forget what happened and throw themselves into a passionate relationship with eachother. She, too, cannot put the dead out of her mind. Can guilt be shared? Can the dead speak to them? Has normality been swept away forever?
Born in Vienna in 1964, he broke off his studies of medicine to become an author and director. Since 1986 he worked in Germany and Austria as a designer and director. In the 90's Payer concentrated on documentaries and commercials. His first feature film was "Untersuchung an Mädeln" (1999), followed by "Ravioli" (2003) and "Villa Henriette" (2004). "Freigesprochen" („Free to Leave“) is, like the ones before, based on literature ("Der jüngste Tag" by Ödön von Horvath).
