A young woman is walking through a city market when she comes across a musician on the street. She watches him a while, and it eventually becomes apparent he is blind. A gust of wind rustles up from the musician's cap and a five Euro note skips out and blows across the street. The young woman catches the note beneath her foot and picks it up, but before she can return it, the blind man has continued on his way. The woman follows the man home, and through a course of bad luck and unlikely timing, she inadvertently finds herself locked inside his flat. Sensing another presence in the room, he begins his search for the suspected intruder. The game of cat and mouse begins...
MICHAEL CHANG was born in the U.S. to Chinese immigrants and grew up in the Northwest city of Seattle. Having studied Broadcast Journalism, he was heading for a career in Advertising when he was offered a job producing an independent feature film during his last year at college. One thing lead to another and eventually he found himself working as a boom operator and sound mixer for productions along the Western United States. Throughout his professional career as a sound engineer, he kept himself busy working on several independent film productions. As a classically-trained violinist since the age of 5, Michael has always held music in high regard, and in a strange but fortunate turn of events, he found himself hired to play in a local Irish pub for several years. Collecting a paycheck to bluff his way through Irish fiddle tunes piqued a genuine interest in traditional music, and in 1999, he moved to Galway City, the "Nashville of Irish Music", to learn from the real masters. He has lived there ever since. "The Listener" is the first film Michael has made in Ireland. He intends to continue filmmaking in Ireland, and is currently developing a feature-length script.
