Andrew Garrison lived in the Eastern Kentucky county in which he filmed THE WILGUS STORIES from 1984 to 1997 where he worked with Appalshop, the award-winning media arts and cultural center. His affiliation with Appalshop dates back to 1978 when he began the documentary, PORTRAITS AND DREAMS on photographs by mountain children taught by Wendy Ewald. His independent productions include ONE RING CIRCUS, a documentary of a small circus traveling in the mountains; HEROES ANDSTRANGERS, a look at men, emotions and the family; and PAUL LAURENCE DUNBAR, a documentary about the African-American poet.
Garrison has also worked for many years as cinematographer. His camera credits include Anne Lewis's JUSTICE IN THE COALFIELDS and FAST FOOD WOMEN, Anne Lewis and Mimi Pickering's CHEMICAL VALLEY and Elizabeth Barret's LONG JOURNEY HOME. He was the sound recordist for Barret's latest work STRANGER WITH A CAMERA, as well as a sound recordist on the recent FRONTLINE program, SCHOOL CHOICE.
He has received regional and national fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, the American Film Institute, and the J. Simon Guggenheim Foundation, as well as from the Kentucky Arts Council and the Kentucky Educational Television. Garrison's current projects include EARL'S WAY, a documentary about an Appalachian, African-American gospel musician, miner, ball-player, blues musician, carnival dancer and church choir director. He recently moved with his family to Austin, Texas where he teaches filmmaking at the University of Texas.
